Lovefortheholidays

Excerpt from MISTLETOE BETWEEN FRIENDS by Samantha Chase

“Focus, Lily!” he snapped and then immediately apologized for his tone.  “The holidays are here, my friend.  That means that there will be a steady stream of parties and get-togethers that we are going to be forced to go to and will have potential spouses thrown at us from every angle.”

“Personally I’m waiting for them to just position us at the foot of the driveway with mistletoe over our heads and signs taped to our chests that say ‘Please marry us’.”  The thought sent a shiver down her spine because she was really only partially kidding.  Lately her mother had really seemed to kick up the campaign to marry Lily off.  Not a day went by where Lily wasn’t asked if she’d met anyone decent or what her plans were for the future.

Dealing with her mother was an exhaustive full-time job within itself.

“I think it’s safe to say,” Cam began, breaking into her train of thought, “that neither of us is looking forward to another holiday season spent ducking and weaving through get-togethers to avoid the match-making patrol.  Agreed?”

“Agreed.  But what choice do we have?  Other than packing our bags right now and both of us moving overseas to get away from the insanity?”

“I’m being serious here.”

“You’re always serious, Cam.  I’m trying to get you to break that habit.”  When she got no response from him she sighed with annoyance.  “Okay, what do you have in mind?”

“We take ourselves off of the market.  If we’re involved with other people, they can’t spend their time trying to marry us off.”

“But we’re not involved with other people; that’s the problem.  Isn’t that what we’ve been talking about for the last hour?  I’m so confused…”

“You’re not confused, Lily, and don’t play the ditzy card with me,” he said patiently.  “I’m saying that we pretend that we are involved.  We.  You and me.”

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller/contemporary romance writer Samantha Chase released her debut novel, Jordan’s Return, in November 2011. Although she waited until she was in her 40’s to publish for the first time, writing has been a lifelong passion. Her motivation to take that step was her students: teaching creative writing to elementary age students all the way up through high school and encouraging those students to follow their writing dreams gave Samantha the confidence to take that step as well.

Her second book, a holiday novella titled “The Christmas Cottage” hit #10 on Amazon’s Overall Best Seller List on Christmas Eve. It was a great Christmas gift! Watching the numbers rise and fall is a daily roller coaster ride but definitely an exciting one! And on February 25th, she released the follow up novella – “Ever After”.

In March 2013, “The Christmas Cottage” was nominated for two Indie Romance Convention Award – Best Indie Romance Novella and Best Indie Contemporary Romance while Samantha was nominated for Indie Author of the Year! In August 2013, the video trailer for “Wait for Me” won an Oscar for Indie Author Book Trailer!

More titles quickly followed: “Catering to the CEO”, “Wait for Me” (Montgomery Brothers book 1), “Trust in Me” (Montgomery Brothers book 2), “In the Eye of the Storm”, and “Stay With Me” (Montgomery Brothers book 3) which hit the USA Today bestseller list upon it’s debut. “Catering to the CEO” was included in the romance bundle “Loving the CEO” – a five-book package – that made the New York Times and the USA Today Bestseller list.

When she’s not working on a new story, she spends her time reading contemporary romances, blogging, playing way too many games of Scrabble on Facebook and spending time with her husband of 24 years and their two sons in North Carolina.

Book Blast — The Gospel According to Prissy by Barbara Casey

81uLkRHXWKL._SL1500_Three Army veteran misfits, a college dropout, an unmotivated high school graduate accused of murder, a controversial warden of a women’s prison, and a little girl with the gift of prophesy – these are the people 31-year-old Lara Kruger invites into her life after suffering a miscarriage, a divorce from an abusive husband, and unemployment.

TWFR is very happy to be able to share a special excerpt from THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO PRISSY:

CaseyQuote

The young child skipped through the tall trees and underbrush, unaware of the puddles created by recent rains or the low-lying tree branches and vines that swiped at her coveralls and scratched her bare arms.  Hugging a doll that showed the wear of a favorite toy and a faint smudge of chocolate ice cream, the child pushed forward with determination.  She knew where she wanted to go, and her face showed the intensity and resolve of a person much older than her five years.  The black woman wearing the uniform of a prison guard struggled to keep up with her young charge.  The thick green tangle of natural forest growth and uneven turf was more of a challenge to a woman her size and stature.

The child stopped when she reached a clearing, that place in the woods that wasn’t quite so overgrown and where the wild vegetation had been pressed from previous visits.  In front of her was a tree, magnificent in size, ancient in age.  She had reached her destination.  She called it, quite simply, “the place.”  Quietly, reverently, she approached the tree, reaching out and touching the familiar rough surface and its many irregular crevices.  She squatted where some roots had pushed upward and were now gnarled and covered in bark before extending downward again deep into the soil.  It was between two of these large root formations that the child placed the doll – a throne.  Her hand explored the curvature of one darkened root, first touching the soft green moss, and then the small indented place that held water whenever it rained.  It was moist.  Satisfied, she knelt.  Then, lowering her head and folding her dimpled hands together, she started to pray.

Weak at the Knees by Jo Kessel

Reviewer: Tracy Santoria
“We got so busy living life that we forgot to live our dreams.”Danni Lewis has been playing it safe for twenty-six years, but her sheltered existence is making her feel old ahead of time. When a sudden death plunges her into a spiral of grief, she throws caution to the wind and runs away to France in search of a new beginning. The moment ski instructor Olivier du Pape enters her shattered world she falls hard, in more ways than one.Their mutual desire is as powerful and seductive as the mountains around them. His dark gypsy looks and piercing blue eyes are irresistible.Only she must resist, because he has a wife – and she’d made a pact to never get involved with a married man.But how do you choose between keeping your word and being true to your soul?Weak at the Knees is Jo’s debut novel in the new adult, contemporary romance genre – a story about love, loss and relationships, set between London and the heart of the French Alps.Due to descriptive sex scenes, this book is not appropriate for younger readers.

KesselQuote2
I am going to be honest and say that when I first started reading Weak in the Knees, I expected it to be similar to the other love stories that are currently out there. Yes, it was a love story between a man and a woman but it was so much more. It showed you that love could be in so many places, including ones that you never imagined them to be. It examined love beyond the typical relationship. It brought you into the love between best friends and the connections that they share. It taught you that sometimes, love just happens and sometimes you can’t choose who you fall in love with. Weak in the Knees puts you on a rollercoaster of emotion and pulls you in because honestly, you cannot wait for the ride to come to a stop and see how it all ends.
KesselQuote1
I give this book 3 stars. Although it was a good book I would have liked to see more in depth story lines between some of the characters.  I think it would have drawn me in more and made me connect with the personalities on a deeper level. All in all it was an enjoyable quick read.
TWFR Rating: 3 Stamps … We liked it!

Book Blast – The Seacrest by Aaron Paul Lazar

3D The Seacrest 3D ImageThey say it’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Finn McGraw disagrees.

He was just seventeen when he had a torrid summer affair with the girl who stole his heart—and then inexplicably turned on him. Finn may have moved on with his life, but he’s never forgotten her.

Now, ten years later, he’s got more than his lost love to worry about. A horrific accident turns his life upside down, resurrecting the ghosts of his long-dead family and taking the lives of the few people he has left.

Finn always believed his estranged brother was responsible for the fire that killed their family—but an unexpected inheritance with a mystery attached throws everything he knows into doubt.

And on top of that, the beguiling daughter of his wealthy employer has secrets of her own. But the closer he gets, the harder she pushes him away.

The Seacrest is a story of intrigue and betrayal, of secrets and second chances—and above all, of a love that never dies.

TWFR is very happy to be able to share a special excerpt of THE SEACREST:

Lazarquote1

July 2, 1997

I’ll never forget the day I fell in love with her.

There she stood, all tall and lanky, dark hair blowing in the breeze as if it loved caressing her face.

She held a beach ball and faced the sea.

She was sixteen.

That’s all it took. That one salty, sandy, sunshiny day—forever staked in my memory.

Her father had claimed a spot on Paines Creek Beach, right next to ours. They laid out a red-and-white striped blanket and matching umbrella with beach chairs, a cooler filled with watermelon and soda, and white paper bags that smelled of fries and burgers.

I’d settled on a beach towel next to my grandfather, Dex McGraw, surreptitiously watching them.

Gramps sat beside me, drinking from a cold thermos of gin and ice, his favorite. He sat with his shirt off and long legs stretched out, his head back and shaggy silver-blond hair glinting in the sun. He always told me his time was “before the hippies,” but I had a feeling he would have made a good one. He was one helluva rebel. And he always stood up for what was right, no matter what.

He saw me watching the girl and casually appraised her, gray eyes slit and his head nodding in approval. With a low whisper, he turned to me. “Pretty girl.”

I know I blushed, because at sixteen that’s all I seemed to do when girls were involved. “Yeah. I guess.” I traced circles in the sand with my forefinger. The sun burned the skin on my back and shoulders, although I’d slathered plenty of sunscreen on earlier at my mother’s insistence.

Stardust Summer by Lauren Clark

819GYtQe6gL-3._SL1500_Amazon & Barnes and Noble

Reviewer: Ashley Mackler-Paternostro

Single mom Grace Mason doesn’t believe in miracles, magic, or love at first sight. She likes the quiet life, complete with her eight-year-old son, their tiny house, and her teaching job. For Grace, happiness means that nothing much ever changes in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

Then, one thousand miles away, tragedy strikes. A massive heart attack leaves Grace’s estranged father comatose in an Upstate New York hospital. While a team of doctors fight to keep Henry Mason alive, Grace and Evan rush to his bedside to say their final goodbyes.

Henry’s passing brings little closure for Grace, but she finds herself inexplicably drawn to her new surroundings. What begins as a short trip results in an entire summer spent with Henry’s second wife, Kathleen, and her next-door neighbor, Ryan Gordon, the town doctor. When a series of unlikely events lead to Evan’s disappearance, Grace must face her worst fears to find her son and bring him back home.

Stardust Summer explores the complexities of forgiveness, what it means to be a family, and the fabulous possibility of falling in love—again.

STARDUST SUMMER begins at the end of one love story and at the start of another.

Grace Mason adores her son, Evan. She’s built her life around him, even her career as a teacher has been carefully selected to ensure she can spend as much time with him as possible in their small hometown of Ocean Springs, Mississippi. She’s happy, content even, but a tragic twist in her otherwise simple life will send Grace (with Evan in tow) to the Finger Lakes region of New York state to face old resentments and maybe find a way to put the past behind her.

ClarkQuote1

Ryan Gordon knows something about loss. His marriage has failed and it’s the sort of devastation he hasn’t come to terms with yet. His position as a small town doctor has left him overworked and now, to share the burden of the tragedy that draws Grace to his town.  He never imagined that in the middle of those two blows he’d find a new start…but life is sometimes surprising.

As Grace and Ryan meet, there is something undeniable happening between them, even if Grace is standoffish at first. But once she steps out of her own way in this charming, albeit at times dark, deep, novel…something magical happens, like the ‘stardust over the water in summer.’

ClarkQuote2

Beautifully written, STARDUST SUMMER is a journey of love and loss, redemption and second chances. Clark has created a cast of likable, relatable characters  which unfold themselves throughout the pages and ultimately leaves the reader wanting, heck, rooting for them to end up happy. Easily digestible chapters allow the reader to become quickly and fully engrossed in the story and Clark’s prose is, in a word, lovely. Written in the vein of startling romances with simple beginning and epic ends, a la Nicholas Sparks, this book is a must read for Women’s Fiction fans.

TWFR Rating: 4 Stamps…Really good, highly enjoyable!
